چکیده
While most current Geographical Information Systems (GIS) are 2D GIS, more and more application domains as geology, civil and military engineering, etc, need 3D GIS. The particularities and capabilities of a 3D GIS are outlined in this paper. Although 3D GIS are not much developped, some studies have already been done, especially in order to represent 3D data for geological or architectural applications. Such 3D models are generally based upon Computer-Aided Design (CAD) models. The use of 3D CAD models for representing 3D in GIS is discussed in the paper. As 3D GIS represent a 3D map, not only the surface of the terrain but also the entities set on the relief, e.g. buildings, have to be represented. The proposed 3D model for a GIS consists of representing 3D entities set on a Digital Terrain Model (DTM). These entities are represented with different approximation levels, the first two being used as index and processes accelerators and the last offering an efficient visualization support. The first two levels are entities decomposition into minimal bounding rectangular parallelepipeds (MBRP). The last level is the external representation: it is a Boundary Representation (BR). Indexation is shortly discussed in the paper. An existing geographical database system is currently extended to support these 3D entities.

A workflow to facilitate three-dimensional geometrical modelling of complex poly-deformed geological units
The three-dimensional (3D) geometry of complexly deformed regions is often beyond the scope of simple 2D and 2.5D representation in cross-sections and block diagrams. Methods must be developed for fully three-dimensional representation. A workflow for such three-dimensional modelling of structurally complex areas is presented. Data requirements are tailored to typical results of structural fiel...

Purpose: In the current study, using different radiobiological models, tumor control probability (TCP) and normal tissue complication probability (NTCP) of radiotherapy plans were calculated for three-dimensional conformal radiation therapy (3D-CRT) and intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) of prostate cancer. Methods and Materials: 10 prostate plans were randomly selected among patients ...
متن کاملA Digital Urban Space Model - - - - A Three Dimensional modelling technique of Urban Space in a GIS Environment
Conventional two dimensional(2D) maps and DTMs are insufficient to represent geographic information in urban space comprising high-rise buildings and underground structures. There is a pressing need for a model of three dimensional(3D) representation of urban space, that is, a Digital Urban Space Model(DUSM). However, existing solid modelling techniques cannot be directly applied to the 3D repr...

This paper discusses the making of three-dimensional geospatial data infrastructure (3D GDI) for Malaysia. The main component of the initiative is 3D city models with CityGML as the standard for data modelling, transfer and exchange. Various aspects of 3D city modelling especially on the construction of the models and texturing of facades via dynamic pulse function are described. The generated ...
متن کاملSpatial Interpolation: From Two to Three Dimensions
Interpolation methods are an important part in a geographical information system (GIS) and have been used for years to model elevation data. They are crucial in the visualisation process (generation of contours), for the conversion of data from one format to another, to have a better understanding of a dataset or simply to identify bad samples. The result of interpolation—usually a surface that...
